Apples are in season and there are so many delicious varieties out there. I grabbed a couple Honey Crisp apples and a couple Fuji apples and made delicious Easy Homemade Applesauce.

PIC of Apples!

This applesauce is so much better then store bought applesauce and is amazingly easy to make, too. It can be sweetened or unsweetened. For this recipe, I used brown sugar to sweeten the applesauce.

Easy Homemade Applesauce Ingredients:

  • Sweet Apples: it’s best to use sweet apples like McIntosh, Fuji, Honey Crisp, Jonathan, Jonagold, or Golden Delicious.
  • Lemon Juice: this is added to water to keep the apples from browning as you are peeling, coring and cutting the other apples.
  • Water: used with lemon juice to keep the apples from browning.
  • Brown Sugar: I used dark brown sugar for this recipe.

How To Make Easy Homemade Applesauce:

1. Add the water and lemon juice to large, non reactive bowl and stir. This will be used for keeping the apples from browning, so make sure the bowl is large enough to hold all the cut apples.

2. Working with one apple at a time, peel and core each apple then cut it into large chunks. Add the chunks of apple as you finished with each apple to the lemon/water mixture.

3. When the apples have all been cut into chunks and added to the lemon/water mixture, add the all of the contents of the bowl to a large saucepan.

4. Add brown sugar to the saucepan.

5. Cook the apple/brown sugar mixture on high until the apple mixture is boiling. Once it’s boiling, turn the heat down to low. Let the apples simmer for 25 – 30 minutes.

6. When the apples were easy to squish with a wooden spoon, remove them from the heat. Let them cool for 5 minutes.

7. Add the cooled apple mixture to the bowl of a food processor and pulse until smooth.

Variations:

  • For chunky applesauce, use a potato masher and mash the apples right in the pan.
  • Add cinnamon, as desired, to the saucepan while cooking the apples, OR
  • Add cinnamon, as desired, before serving.

  • 4 large apples peeled, cored, and quartered
  • 3/4 cup of water
  • 2 teaspoons lemon juice
  • 1/4 cup brown sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon optional

Instructions

  • Add water and lemon juice to a non reactive bowl that is large enough to hold all of the apples chunks.
  • Working with one apple at a time, peel and core the apple. Cut the apple into large 1 inch chunks. Add the chunks of apple to the water/lemon mixture in the bowl. Continue, until all the apples have been cut and are in the bowl.
  • Add the contents of the bowl to a large saucepan.
  • Add the brown sugar to the saucepan.
  • Place the saucepan filled with the apple mixture on the stove and turn the heat on high. Once the mixture in the pan boils, reduce the heat to low. • For a smooth Homemade Applesauce, let the apple mixture cool for 5 minutes then add it to a food processor bowl. Pulse the mixture until smooth.
  • For a chunky Homemade Applesauce, use a potato smasher and smash the apples until desired chunkiness.
  • This Homemade Applesauce is great served warm with cinnamon. Enjoy!
